Saudi Arabia has joined the Madrid Protocol (the governing Treaty of the Madrid System), effective October 8, 2026. The Madrid Protocol makes it convenient to register and manage trademarks globally because you can file one application in one language and seek protection in 130+ member countries. It's usually cheaper than filing separately in each country through local counsel, and results in a single registration to renew rather than having to track and renew multiple national renewal dates and requirements. 

Administrative changes are easier too (name, address, ownership) and it's possible to add new countries (subsequent designations) later, without starting a new application. 

Saudi Arabia approved joining the Protocol in 2023, but didn't deposit the instrument of accession with WIPO until July 2026. This gap isn't uncommon since countries need to align domestic trademark law and regulations with the Protocol's requirements.

This addition will create more ease for applicants in Saudi Arabia but also for anyone whose portfolio extends there. Some see Saudi's signing of the Madrid Protocol as an indication of its commitment to align intellectual property laws with international standards, including enforcement of infringements.
