The World Needs More Data Centers, Not Fewer

Opposition to data center expansion has become fashionable—a rallying cry for those who mistake the scaffolding of progress for its enemy. But framing data centers as environmental villains and the non-rightful consumers of electricity is not merely shortsighted; it is dangerous. The infrastructure that powers artificial intelligence is not a luxury. It is the foundation upon which humanity's most urgent breakthroughs will be built.

Consider the stakes. AI is already being deployed to map destructive sand dredging, chart emissions of methane, and help governments make more planet-friendly choices (UN Environment Program, November 2025). The same UNEP that raises legitimate questions about AI's footprint acknowledges that these technologies could potentially lead to everything from medical breakthroughs to solutions to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. This is not speculative futurism. It is happening now—and it requires computational infrastructure, powered by a robust energy source, to scale. Marc Andreessen put it bluntly in his landmark essay, Why AI Will Save the World. AI offers the opportunity to "profoundly augment human intelligence" to achieve outcomes including "the creation of new medicines to ways to solve climate change to technologies to reach the stars" (Why AI Will Save the World, June 2023).

Critics counter that data centers consume enormous energy. They are right—and that fact is precisely what makes this moment so transformative. AI's voracious appetite for power is forcing the commercialization of technologies that have languished for decades. Microsoft has signed a binding power purchase agreement with Helion Energy for commercial fusion power. Sam Altman has invested heavily in Oklo microreactors. Google is building geothermal plants. As the World Economic Forum reported in January 2026, "Fusion energy can provide the large amounts of reliable, emissions-free power that advanced AI systems require. In turn, AI can accelerate the development and commercialization of fusion energy." This is not a vicious cycle—it is a virtuous one.

The choice before policymakers is not between data centers and a clean planet. It is between a future where AI-driven innovation solves climate change, cures diseases, and lifts billions from poverty—and a future where we throttle that progress out of misplaced caution. 

We should build more data centers—urgently, ambitiously, and unapologetically. The cost of inaction is measured not in megawatts, but in human lives.
